How to Remove a Background for Clean Sticker Contours
2026-08-13
Background removal decides how good your cut line will be. Here is how to get crisp transparent edges from photos, scans and line art.
Why the background matters
The contour tracer follows the boundary between opaque and transparent pixels. Semi-transparent halos, leftover background specks or anti-aliased white edges all push that boundary outwards and produce a fuzzy, over-detailed cut path.
Photos and product shots
- Use the AI background removal tool, then zoom in and repair edges with the eraser and restore brushes.
- Watch out for hair, fur and glass — refine those areas manually.
- Flatten any drop shadow you do not want cut around.
Line art and scanned drawings
- Scan at 600 DPI on plain white paper.
- Use the magic wand on the white background rather than AI removal.
- Add a white keyline in your design if you want a visible sticker border.
Verify before generating the contour
Toggle the checkerboard preview and inspect the edge at 400% zoom. If you can see grey fringing, clean it first — five minutes here saves a reprint later.
